Get the Facts & Find Leaks Fast

Clearwater, Fla. -- American homes can waste - on average - 10,000 gallons of water every year due to running toilets, dripping faucets, and other household leaks! Get out your tool belt, and find and fix those leaks during Fix a Leak Week, from March 17 to 23. Know the facts:

- Ten percent of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more per day.

- A showerhead leaking at 10 drips per minute wastes more than 500 gallons per year. That's enough water to wash 60 loads of dishes in your dishwasher.

- A leaky faucet that drips at the rate of one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons per year.

- Common types of leaks found in the home include leaking toilet flappers, dripping faucets, and other leaking valves. All are easily correctable.

- Fixing easily corrected household water leaks can save homeowners more than 10 percent on their water bills.

- Keep your home leak-free by repairing dripping faucets, toilet valves, and showerheads.

- The majority of leaks can be eliminated after retrofitting with new fixtures and high-efficiency appliances. Check your plumbing fixtures and irrigation systems for leaks that waste water, too.

The amount of water leaked from American homes nationwide could exceed more than one trillion gallons per year. Thatís equal to the annual household water use in more than 11 million homes. Visit for more information.
