CLEARWATER , Fla. -- On Thursday, June 19 at 10 a.m. the Safety Rock Foundation Corporation will present to the City of Clearwater’s Ross Norton Recreation & Aquatic Complex a check for $1500 to provide free swimming lessons to children in low-income families. The check will be presented to City of Clearwater Mayor George Cretekos. The center is located at 1426 S. Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue.

Safety Rock Foundation Corporation was founded last year with a goal to reduce child drowning deaths and near-deaths by providing innovative programming and educational outreach opportunities for the Tampa Bay area. The foundation was formed last year by Tampa Bay resident Rocky Trahan after he learned of startling child drowning statistics. “Florida is 300% above the national average in recorded child drowning from age 1 to 4. Every child deserves to learn how to swim regardless of the cost,” said Trahan. Their “Swim Like a Dolphin Program” provides funds for organizations to offer low-cost swim lessons to Tampa Bay area children. The foundation is currently completing a pool safety video DVD that will be given to all Hillsborough County residents applying for pool permits. The foundation also supports the Coast Guard’s life jacket program.

City of Clearwater’s Ross Norton Recreation and Aquatic Complex & Extreme Sports Park and North Greenwood Recreation and Aquatic Complex offer low-cost swim lessons to families meeting certain criteria. The two facilities are also the only two locations in Pinellas County offering bilingual swim lessons to infants, children and adults. Open swims and private parties are also available during the summer.

The City of Clearwater offers swim classes and open swim opportunities at three additional facilities: the Long Center’s indoor pool, 1501 N. Belcher Road; Morningside Pool, 2400 Harn Blvd; and Clearwater Beach Family Aquatic Center, 69 Bay Esplanade.
